Circusplaneet kocht in 2015 de kerk van de sociale woonwijk Malem in Gent. Met die aankoop breit de circusorganisatie een nieuw hoofdstuk aan de rijke Gentse circusgeschiedenis.
Circusplaneet tovert de kerk met de steun van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap (Fonds voor Culturele Investeringen) en met de steun van de Europese Unie (Europees Fonds voor Regionale Ontwikkeling) om tot een ‘community circus’: een plek waar mensen samenwerken met circus als drijfveer, een plek die aanzet tot dialoog en ontmoeting in de buurt, een plek waar jong (en minder jong) circusgeweld kan trainen en creëren, een plek waar kinderen en jongeren op een niet-formele manier leren.
Om deze renovatie tot een goed einde te brengen, werkte Circusplaneet samen met architectenbureau Plano. Zij hebben onze noodzaken omgezet in een haalbaar ontwerp dat onze dromen kan waarmaken. De belangrijkste ingrepen zijn de realisatie van een foyer met open deuren voor de buurt en de inrichting van een circuszaal met de nodige faciliteiten. Er gebeurden ook een paar noodzakelijke ingrepen om de oude kerk te transformeren een hedendaags semi-publiek gebouw.
Zo kan de droom van Circusplaneet verder groeien, onder de kerktoren, maar ook ver daarvandaan.
De Koning Boudewijnstichting verleende haar medewerking aan het project. Tot eind 2020 konden giften gestort worden. Meer informatie vind je op de website www.circuskerk.be
The circus church
Circusplaneet bought the church of the social housing estate Malem in Ghent in 2015. With that purchase, the circus organization adds a new chapter to the rich Ghent circus history.
Circusplaneet transforms the church with the support of the Flemish Community (Cultural Investment Fund) and with the support of the European Union (European Regional Development Fund) into a “community circus”: a place where people work together with circus as the driving force, a place that encourages dialogue and meeting in the neighbourhood, a place where young (and not so young) circus lovers can train and create, a place where children and young people learn in a non-formal way.
To bring this renovation to fruition, Circusplaneet worked with the architecture office Plano. They have transformed our needs into a feasible design that can realize our dreams. The most important interventions are the realization of a foyer with open doors for the neighbourhood and the establishment of a circus hall with the necessary facilities. There were also a few necessary interventions to transform the old church into a contemporary semi-public building.
Thus the dream of Circusplaneet can continue to grow, under the church tower, but also far from it.
